Pip Hellier

Pip first joined IP Asset in 2019, and following a period elsewhere in private practice, returned to the firm in September 2022.

He holds a PhD in catalysis chemistry from Cardiff University, which he conducted at the UK\’s national synchrotron facility, Diamond Light Source. His research focussed on metal oxide selective oxidation catalysts and innovative methods of extracting surface-sensitive chemical information using synchrotron X-ray techniques. Prior to his postgraduate studies, he obtained an MSci in Chemistry from Imperial College London.

Since joining the profession, Pip has gained experience in all aspects of the patent lifecycle, from drafting to prosecution, through to opposition and questions of infringement. He has also worked on other forms of intellectual property rights, both registrable and unregistrable. Much of his experience has been with SMEs and start-ups, and he has particularly enjoyed developing close, almost \’in-house\’ relationships with clients.

Pip has significant experience with a wide range of chemical subject matter, including agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, polymers and solar cells, and in technical areas beyond chemistry, such as biomaterials, environmental technology and medical devices. He greatly enjoys helping inventions in all fields blossom into commercial realities.

In his spare time and when the weather permits he greatly enjoys piloting light aircraft, having obtained his pilot’s licence in 2015. When not airborne, he enjoys ballroom and Latin dancing and learning new languages.
