Simon is a qualified Trademark Attorney and Barrister with over 30 years’ experience in commercial practice, focused on the protection and enforcement of Trademarks
After training with Withers & Rogers, Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys in their London office for two years, Simon started his career in industry with Unilever in London in 1989 where he managed a wide range of well-known brand portfolios in the field of ‘edible oils and fats and frozen confectionery’, which included FLORA margarine and the WALLS range of ice creams
In 1993 he relocated to Bristol to work in the Trademark Department of Allied Domecq Plc and was promoted to head up that Department from 1995. That Company owned a wide range of well-known brands for alcoholic drinks including BALLANTINES whisky, COURVOISIER cognac and BEEFEATER gin, but also franchised Brands in the retail sector such as BASKIN ROBBINS ice cream and DUNKIN DONUTS.
Prior to the Company’s acquisition by Pernod Ricard, Simon relocated northwards in 2004 to Head up the Trade Marks Department of AstraZeneca Plc based in Alderley Edge in Cheshire. The transition from FMCG companies to an R&D driven company, where patents underpin the commercial profitability of the Company and Trademarks play a supporting role, brought new challenges; getting to grips with the pharmaceutical regulatory environment added another layer of complexity affecting the use and registration of Trademarks and drove several changes of strategy in the corporate approach to their selection and protection.
Having worked in both the alcoholic drinks industry and then in the drugs industry, Simon attempted to revive the trajectory of his career in 2010 by joining Syngenta A.G. in Basel, Switzerland, as its Trademark Director, a Company whose stated ambition was and is to ‘feed the world ‘and ‘bring plant potential to life’.
Following the acquisition of Syngenta by Chemchina, a chinese state owned Company, Simon returned to the UK, joining the IP Asset Partnership Ltd in March 2018 as Director of Trademarks to build upon and expand its Trademark footprint.
Throughout his career Simon has been an active member of practitioner associations focused on trademarks including INTA, MARQUES, PTMG and ECTA. He was part of the Management Team of ECTA from 2004-2010, serving as its President from 2008-2010
Outside of work, Simon is married to an Italian and enjoys Italian cuisine, probably too much! He also follows and supports keenly the sporting activities of his two sons, who row and play tennis competitively and enjoys interaction with his daughter who is working towards her PHD in Psychology
